I recently turned the last page of the Rough Guide To The Blues and I enjoyed every single page. It gave me a hollostic view of the genre, a good understanding of its roots, and in the process introduced me to what are now mainstay favourites among my collection. The Rough Guide To The Blues isn’t done giving, because it is almost impossible to listen to all the recommended work by all artists featured so I have still plenty to go on. Also, as I have experienced with The Rough Guide To Reggae, it will serve as a encyclopedia for many years to come. Since most of (if not all) The Rough Guides books on music date from the pre-streaming era there are no digital playlists to be found and you have to put in some work searching the streaming platforms by yourself. It is this last bit that I’m writing about. Before even opening the book, I created a The Rough Guide To The Blues playlist that grew page after page and chapter by chapter adding material that took my interest. Since I already did the heavy lifting, I thought you might as well enjoy the fruits of my labor. The playlist now contains 193 hours and 56 minutes of music covering the humble beginnings to the modern day Blues revivalists. I might have missed a couple of interesting bits and pieces along the way but that’s mostly because some music simply doesn’t exists in today’s streaming society. From the ones that do exist on Spotify, here are a few favourites that also made it to Wanderinglion one way or another.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So, dig in deep with the playlist below and perhaps you will discover a hidden appreciation for Blues music just like me. Just for future reference, I’m now sinking my teeth in The Rough Guide To Country and I’m very curious what it will bring. Keep an eye on the now playing page as I’m sure I will be adding some Country albums pretty soon.
Super cool that you also dive into this genre. Lovely the blues guitar. A new world opens up for us.
Thanks! That’s exactly how it feels to me, stepping into a new world. I couldn’t have put in better words. Enjoy the music!
